7 Tonnes in One Plane on One Day

One plane can make a huge difference in a land cut off from the rest of the world

On his last flying day of 2016 Michael Duncalfe flew over 7 tonnes of building supplies plus staff to do the construction, from Kompiam to Yenkisa in Enga Province. Dr Dave Mills, who heads up the rural hospital at Kompiam and who runs a very effective rural health programme, is constructing new houses for health workers at Yenkisa.

Later in 2017 he plans to build a new health centre at Iropena, a very short distance by air from Yenkisa.

At the moment Iropena isn’t in a suitable condition for the Twin Otter to land, so unless major repair work is carried out, the building material will have to be carried quite literally over the mountain from Yenkisa.
